I had a goblin ambush or two, and one of the two elven traders died, but the other survived, and left on his journey.

By which I mean he's just bumming around the depot, as he appears to have lost his pack animal.

I don't think this is supposed to happen.

You might check to see if he is stricken by melancholy.  This can happen if he was good friends with the other traders who died or if one of the pack animals was his pet.

I've had human traders stick around after the "Traders have left" message.

The reason was that they arrive from one map side, but want to depart to another map side. (They had wagons, which means they need a 3 tile wide path. You can check which parts of the map are accessible to wagons (starting from your depot) using Shift-D.)
So I made a path to the map edges that I thought the humans might want to reach (the location where the elven traders arrived earlier, actually). Once I'd got the depot accessible (smooth rocks, cut trees, build 3-tile wide ramps ...) they did leave. Maybe the elf (if he's just one) just needs a stair to get up to that southeast platform, or something?

Traders leave the same way they came from.

At least ALL of the traders I've seen.

No, he was fine. I eventually got fed up and ordered all his crap dumped and dismantled the depot.

@kiru - ok, I admit it's possible that it was the same direction, and that some trees grew to block wagono access while the traders were trading at my depot. I was fairly sure, though, that they arrived from the West and left to Southeast. Hm.

I had a map where traders would leave by a completely different edge than they came onto the map by....wandering through the entirety of my (dry) waterworks project to get there.
