1) I have several stray dogs in a wooden cage (along with tons of puppies and kittens due to the breeding bug). The trainer is not grabbing any of the dogs from the cage to train.

2) I am not getting any error messages from the animal trainer when trying to train war dogs when I have none available. I'll queue up a few, the trainer will get there without dragging a dog with him, get confused, clear the queue and leave. I think having my stray dogs caged might be ruining his vibe, but without an error message I can't say for sure.

3) The animal trainer is training people's pet dogs. This is bad; I don't want my dwarves getting sad because poochie was pressed into service and died. I think he only does it because there are no stray dogs available, but I don't want him to do that unless I direct him to.

Being a war dog would probably lessen the chances of death since the dog would still follow the dwarf anyways. The best way to free all your canines is by making a lever and hooking it up to the cage, then having a dwarf pull it. Should work.

I wanted to add another thing I noticed which I think is probably a bug, or at least a design issue that needs to be addressed:

If you mark a stray dog to be butchered, and that dog is chosen for war dog training, it will still be butchered even if it has already become a war dog.  Please, either make it impossible for dogs marked for slaughter to be trained as wardogs, or make it so that its butcher tag is reset when it is trained!
