Looking for games to be played online with 2 people.

So I want to find games to play with one of my friends but there's a lot of crap out there so I'm asking for suggestion.

1. Desire them to be free, I am unlikely to convince my friend to buy new stuff.
2. Will mostly be playing with 1 other person, and I want a fun experience with that.
3. Any genre is fine but I'm full up on FPS so they are less desirable unless they are really unique.
4. MMO is acceptable only if it would be fun to play as a two person group.
5. Must be played online.
5. TB Strategy is great, RTS not so much.
6. Should have official servers or work with hamachi.

Previous good experiences:
1. Battle for Wesnoth. Played to death.
2. Never Winter Nights RP servers. Sadly he lost his CD key...

Bad:
1. Freeciv, too hard for my friend/ Otherwise fine.
2. DF Bloodline. He was unable to understand how to play, lol :P

WinSPMBT is a good one if you don't mind play by email.It's a TB strategy with hexes and delicious bullets.

Off the top of my head:


Champions Online
Alien Swarm
Spiral Knights
Dungeons and Dragons Online


There's also Team Fortress 2 if you and your friend are alright with playing against others.

Portal 2 isn't free.

But I came in here to recommend Alien Swarm, which is fun for a few hours.  A lot of games are made for four people, though, so it might be hard to really hit a good stride with just two.
