Invading trolls turning up in the caverns?????
« on: September 11, 2011, 02:50:19 am »

So, two invading forces, fought off with acceptable losses from the front door.

Then I notice that a dozen of my non-fighting dwarves have been struck down, including 2 legendary stone crafters.  WT*???

And there's a contingent of invading trolls in the CAVERNS!!! How did they get in? CAN they attack this way?

Looking at it, there is no way into my part of the caverns except through deep water - trolls can swim now?

Any ideas welcome, as I still can't work out what the *** happened.  And the fort has crumbled, as while I was trying to sort out the mystery of the scuba trolls, Urist McWTF wandered onto the very top of the walls to look at the elite goblin bowman, got shot, and now there's a pile of a dozen more sock looters on top of the walls.  Sigh...

I don't think I've ever heard of this happening before, so I'm guessing that it is either a bug or there is a way down into your caverns from the surface, perhaps through a door/floodgate/hatch or whatnot that they gladly smashed in.

Invaders never appear in the caverns though. Are you sure these trolls are actually invaders not wild trolls? Wild trolls do live in the upper caverns, after all, and act similar to the goblins' siege trolls in that they love to smash up your doors. And dwarves.

And to help with the idiots-at-large, go to the 'o'rders menu and find the option to forbid all of your dead and their belongings upon death (not running df at the moment, sorry...), or manually forbid corpses you don't want the dwarves going near. Best done by pressing 'd'esignations - 'b' - 'f', and selecting a rectangle over large areas at once. d-b-c will let you reclaim items.

Cool - the trolls had names and gear, which means they are not wild? Is that right?

I played my last fort with forbidden dead and their possessions, and that worked fine except for the times I forgot to unforbid the dead and that made a few unhappy thoughts...

If a troll has a name it probably came along with the goblins. Either that, or it killed a Dwarf. The difference is in how they're named. If the troll is named Zom or Ngoslu or another goblin name then it came along with the goblins, if the name is more Dwarf-like and has a translation beneath it's more of a honorific given for killing Dwarfs.

There was a bug in 40d# where invaders could spawn on the map in spots other than the map boundary on the surface. No idea if its still present as I haven't experienced it yet in 0.31.25. My first run in with it involved an entire siege of tree ents spawning in my central staircase. Entire fort was dead in moments.
