Cabinets: Y U NO WORK?!

Yeah...for some reason I can't assign cabinets to dorfs. I get the assignment screen and I select the dorf in question and then BLAM! Nothing happens, the cabinet isn't assigned to them. I really need to find out why so my sheriff can work...

You don't assign containers to dwarves - you build them in the dwarf's bedroom, office, dining room, or tomb.

Then why can I assign coffers to people? And the cabinet is in his bedroom, but his screen doesn't say he has a cabinet...

Never mind, found out why. The cabinet was assigned as a room on its own. This thread, pop it lock it and drop it.

But you can create a room out of them and assign to any dorf.

A room built off a coffer or chest is a barracks, and dwarves don't actually own barracks.  Dwarves may own a bedroom, dining rooms, study, tomb, and I believe statue gardens and zoos.  Any furniture within their rooms are under their owned items list.  I sometimes make a closet for nobles by putting a chair in a room with cabinets and assigning it, and then bathing it in magma to remove the clothes.  Because proper closets should be magma.
