started a new fortres, the site had a large river, trees, some cliffs, good farmable land, and a decent amount of mineral resources too, what the embark map failed to show was that there were 2 zlevels of aquifer as well so it came as a shock to me that the site i started digging in i managed to dig into a cliff face then 1 zlevel down before i started getting damp rock messages. is this a bug or should i be thinking about firing my dwarven geologist?

Did you check all biomes? There might be an aquifer under one part of the map that's not present under a different part.

If you did thoroughly check each biome before embarking, then it could be an underground river or pool.

i didn't do a biome check but the aquifer covers most of the map so it still should have shown on the embark screen

If possible, zip your save folder and upload it to something like http://www.rapidshare.com/

If it's just damp stone, you might simply have an underground river.

nah i used reveal.exe and saw how much it covered, the map had a great river in it though so maybe that obscured things, doesn't matter now though cus the power went out before i could save it...
