One might be better off trying to port DOS to modern hardware... Then port the necessary libraries to that...

I know of FreeDOS, but nothing really about it. Anyone know how it does on modern hardware?

FreeDOS runs just fine on modern computers AFAIK, but I doubt it's still going to run DF.

However, if you want to try running DF on ancient or low-end hardware, or just like the retro feel of playing on a text console, you could install a minimal Linux distro and use [PRINT_MODE:TEXT] to play DF in text mode.  I tried that on my Asus Eee PC 900 back in the 40d days and it worked great.  Mind you, I haven't done any recent testing to see if the 2D graphical print modes are actually any slower than text mode on modern DF versions -- I've heard that they've improved considerably.  But still, if you want to play DF without using Windows or X at all, text mode in a Linux console is the way to go.

(The really neat thing about text mode, however, is that you can play DF over telnet/SSH from another computer.  OK, I guess you could do that in graphics mode using a remote X connection or remote desktop software, but those things tend to be pretty slow if you're not on the same local network.)
