Megaproject: Iram of the Pillars?
« on: September 07, 2011, 09:50:55 am »

I was reading a book on Arabic Mythology when I came across this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iram_of_the_Pillars
Iram of the Tall Pillars was also called the "Atlantis of the Sands" or "Ubar". From the descriptions I read, the mythical city was craved from a mountain, and elevated with high pillars. The palaces were floored with gold and scented with oils. The dungeons were carved from an underground aquifer. Exotic plants and trees grew everywhere, while the gardens were decorated with statues of unimaginable detail. At the front of the city was a gate made out of an adamantine like substance. I'll tell you more as I research this and start building.

This is Dwarf Fortress. Where torture, enslavement, and murder are not only tolerable hobbies, but considered dwarfdatory.

H.P.Lovecraft refers to it a number of times with one suggestive detail being the "pillar of flesh", which was literalized in the lovecraftian gamebox game Eternal Darkness--the pillar is a circular summoning tower, whose mortar is mixed with human (migrant) sacrifices.  Build, then release h.f.s. from the center :)
