Umm, who said anything about not washing them?

Bicarb of soda dissolved in water takes care of pretty much anything.  Essential oils give them a nice smell :)

Water? you can't get them wet.

At least to my knowledge.

You can't get them wet if you're relying on wax products to hold them together.  It's fine if you're doing them naturally.

Oh good, you're going the clean route.

That's really my only problem with dreads. So many people use a lazy and kind of disgusting way to form them.

But I got to be honest. When I smell essential oils and stuff, I assume its there to cover up an odor, regardless of it smells nice. There's a reason hippies are associated with patchouli.

I have a little warning from someone I know who had dreadlocks: Buy a hairdryer. Whenever he got his hair wet, it would take in excess of 24 hours to dry unassisted.

You know if you get pretty short hair then you don't need to brush your hair. When you wake up in the morning it looks the same as when you went to bed because there isn't enough of it to move around.

That's one of many many problems with silly people :P

Sometimes, not always.  I'm kinda obsessed with cleanliness, so it'll just be a nice bonus in my case.

Did not think of this, thanks for the heads up :)

I have nothing against people with short hair, but I can't do it.  It makes me feel as though I'm in disguise.

If you're white, don't do it. Once when I was a callow youth I got it into my head that I was going to get dreadlocks. After a while I realized white people can't have nice dreadlocks, and just grew out my hair instead. This was also kind of a bad idea - or at least, keeping it that way for so long was - but at least I didn't have dreads.

See how they look gross?

I mean, it's a matter of taste, but seriously, you need kinky hair to have nice dreads.

On the plus side, it takes so long to grow out your hair that you'll probably change your mind by then, like I did.

Also, you're probably still in school/college, but in case you're in the professional world, keep in mind how people are going to look at you with dreads. Good luck getting a new job. It may be unreasonable, but people see dreads on a white person and they think, filthy pothead dropout. Just more food for thought from the devil's advocate...

Meh, I like them.  It's cool with me if you don't though.  I'm generally not too concerned about what others think of me either.  If someone is so shallow or ignorant that they'd look down on someone for something as frivolous as their hairstyle, then I'm pretty sure they aren't the kind of person I want anything to do with.

I'm in college at present studying for an extended diploma in IT and work part time for a fairly large IT company, so there shouldn't be many problems from those areas.  My manager being Rastafarian won't hurt either ;)

Three days without combing.  Early days, but things are progressing quicker than I expected.

I like the looks of dreadlocks.  I don't understand how they work, but I like looking at them.
