World gen issues: making a desert world
« on: September 01, 2011, 09:14:59 pm »

Welp, I've spent all night trying to make a world that's dominated by deserts and badlands. I succeeded once, tossed it out because I messed up my desired cavern parameters, and suddenly I am getting swamped with constant rejection. I've tried to go back to whatever presets I had for that successful world but I must have screwed up along the way. Now I simply can't get an abundance of deserts.

I've been trying to use PerfectWorldDF, even, to make this work. I simply keep ramming into constant rejection OR a proliferation of forest and grassland tiles. I want to keep those to an absolute minimum.

I . . . am not good at world gen. I would like to learn more about how to make it work, but I think I'll need a more guided hand than the wiki provides. I mostly just want to know what sort of parameters I should be shooting for to try and aim for a desert world. What parameters should I be futzing with in order to try and get what I want? Temperature? Drainage? How does drainage and temperature determine the presence of deserts? How can I tweak those to minimize forest areas and maximize dry zones?

Man, this is frustrating. Share your issues with world gen too, if you like.

Turn rainfall down. This should increase the total number of deserts in your world (and decrease the total number of tropical jungles too) make sure that you don't turn it down too far though, or you will get constant rejections.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!
