Buckets propping doors open
« on: September 01, 2011, 02:01:38 am »

Is there a reason why this is happening? I've made a danger room and set the door to be kept tightly shut so that pets don't follow my soldiers and get themselves killed. Well, a dwarf fainted in the danger room, someone apparently brought him some water in the bucket, but then decided to leave it in the doorway. Pets got in, got skewered, now I have angry soldiers.

How can I prevent this?

Dumping the bucket will cure your current problem. As for the danger room entrance I suggest that you make it multiple doors thick
i.e.
Code: [Select]
    XDX
    XDX
XXXXXDXXXXX
Danger Room
Since if its only 1 door thick then pet will often still slip in when the doors open for squad members to get through.

You could also place all of your soldier's pets into a pasture which will keep them confined to a certain area.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Making multiple doors can make these events impossible or at least very unlikely. Having a furniture stockpile specifically for buckets nearby also helps. Most dwarves will take the buckets right back to the stockpile after giving water or filling a pond.
Dumping it will resolve the problem for now. Be sure to have a dump zone ready.

This reminds me of the good old monarch butterfly corpse that played a significant role in the downfall of Boatmurdered by being jammed into the entrance door...
