So I copied the text directly from the wiki to make wood from the smelter, adding in a wood type, put the permitted reactions in the right folder, and I still can't make wood.  What am I doing wrong?

Did you copy it into an existing world?
Because adding in new reactions requires a regen unless you replace an old reaction.
