Bedrooms!
« on: August 31, 2011, 02:13:04 pm »

So I went to all the trouble of making bedrooms for my initial 7. Made the beds, installed the beds, designated the bedrooms, assigned the beds manually, one for each dwarf.

But most of my dwarves are continuing to sleep on the floor, wherever they happen to be when they get tired. Their happiness is suffering.

What am I overlooking?

If they're really far from their beds, or a job took a really long time, they might be passing out from exhaustion before they can reach the bed.

Yikes! Is there a good fix for that? Or is it just something that happens?

They weren't far--just one z level down.

Weird....

Locked door(s)?
Or maybe a (forgotten) burrow?
Broken stairs or otherwise no path to their bedrooms?

I was going to say I haven't seen that, but actually I think I did only when one of my forts was starting.  I think that the dwarfs were kept occupied with moving starting goods indoors, mining, clearcutting and other ongoing tasks and just didn't have any downtime.

I'd check that they have access, but if you've got a lot of jobs and no idlers you may just have dutiful, hard-working dwarfs.

You don't need to manually assign the rooms. In fact it may be better if you don't. The dwarves will sleep wherever they want- any available bed- and eventually they might decide to inhabit one of those rooms you created; it will happen automatically.

The only manual assignment of rooms you need to do is for nobles.

It's a good idea to have a few beds built near central hubs of your fort that aren't in a room and can't be owned. These will be community property and any dwarf can use them as needed (especially helpful when you get a migration wave and don't have rooms ready for everyone).
