I kind of like gods not being in pantheons now, it feels more like a jumble of omnipotent beings with unsure alliances, than something humans and dwarves have invented and ordered in a nice family of gods.

Well, I support them being aligned in pantheons, I guest think that gods should have the opportunity to be adopted or dropped from pantheons as circumstances permit, so you could have multiple races worshiping the same god. I think it still manages to keep the motives of the gods unclear, while allowing for fun stuff like goblin/human/elven missionaries/pilgrims/crusaders/heretics etc. I think it would be interesting if gods would jocky for position with each other (either directly or through their followers), especially gods that had similar spheres.
