Junk sitting on traps
« on: August 31, 2011, 07:28:41 pm »

Noob question...

I have a row of traps I use for thwarting the odd goblin ambush.  After they've done their job they are absolutely covered with about 20 or 30 pieces of "forbidden" junk that I have to manually go in and claim each piece and then dispose of it.  Is there a better way??

Keeping my fortress clean is my biggest problem... I always end up with ENORMOUS stockpiles of random stuff left behind by things when they die.

You can claim things in the stocks screen but you need a record keeper to have accurate figures there. If you have bins then the crap can be packaged into bins and takes up less space. Sell it to the traders, dump it in magma or destroy it under a bridge.

Suggestion: Explore your designations menu for a couple minutes.

Or just press d-b-c. Lets you designate an area to claim. the d-b menu has lots of other neat options, as well, like if you suddenly had another attack and didn't want your dwarves rushing out to grab the now unforbidden junk, you can forbid it all again. (of course burrows work better for that, but are slightly more annoying).

In the Orders -> Forbid menu you can set the equipment enemies drop to be claimed. Then when an enemy dies on your trap your dwarves will go claim their stuff automatically.

...but be warned, that often leads to hapless dwarves wandering into danger in the name of storing a random item.

Remove the forbid tag with d-b-c.  Then I suggest that you dig a 1x1 pit in your trap hall for dumping. At the bottom of that pit you can put a depot, some magma, or an atom-smashing drawbridge. I would leave bins out of it.

That doesn't actually do anything meaningful anymore, since foreign units have all of their equipment forbidden the instant they enter the map (to prevent it from being assigned to your military dwarves).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I usually mass unforbid all of it, then mass dump them, then reclaim what I want to keep before it gets dumped. Minimal sifting because I typically only want to keep their metal items, and sometimes not even that. I also like to make sure a few of my haulers don't touch refuse so I can get the useful stuff out of the way faster, and it keeps the fort running smoothly during a big dump job.

For some reason, I often find that my dwarves just don't want to dump the items I've reclaimed. Not sure why. They just drop them off in stockpiles regardless.
