Do Goblin Thieves have the ability to escape from cages?
« on: August 30, 2011, 01:55:13 pm »

I have a 4x5 grid of cage traps at the only entrance to my fort. Goblin thieves come in, get spotted by people, are chased out and wind up in the cages. They are immediately transported to an animal/cage stockpile. But it seems like I keep seeing "urist mcfatpants interrupted by goblin thief" and then I look and its one of the same two goblin thieves caught in the traps running around again and the whole cycle starts over, they bolt for the entrance, are attacked, caught in trap, carried back to stockpile.
I keep marking them for trade in the trade depot. I was hoping I could sell them to the merchants since they come up under the pets menu. Is this why they keep escaping?

You cannot sell caged creatures. When you bring a cage to a depot, the creature inside will always escape as far as I know.

Woops.

But they sell me caged cows, hens, etc. So we can't sell animals back?

I don't know why but I've never been able to sell an animal back to a caravan, they've always escaped and I stopped trying.

Tamed stuff you can cage and sell without problem. If the occupant isn't tame, well your dwarves will let the creature out and take the cage to the depot empty. Provided the now freed creature doesn't eat your dwarf.

Okay, well let me ask you this. I just bought some dogs and 2 cats from a caravan because I didn't start with them. I see them in my animal stockpile in cages. How do I let them out to roam around and catch vermin and what have you?

Build the cage somewhere then release them by unassigning them from the cage's menu or link the cage to a lever and pull it.

I think you can also go to a pasture and assign them to a pasture and they will be let out of the cages too.
