Setting up magma safely - how to?
« on: August 29, 2011, 12:16:23 am »

Urist mcnoob again! Back with moar stupid df questions!

This episode time I have just found the lava sea! The prospect of magma forges galore is an exiting one, as I'm kinda running out of coal and lignite a bit and plus, it's magma

Anyways, I havnt dealt with magma before and was wondering what dangers it brings/precautions I can take to limit the amount of fun I have.

So far I just have a little tunnel leading to a channeled pit of lava connected to the lava sea, dug by a dwarf who opened up the lava, ran back a few steps and bled to death (lol WTF?)

L L L L L L                      Lava sea
L L L L L L L L L L L L L L Lava sea
L L L L L L                      Lava sea

Kinda dumb I know, does lava have pressure? I think I just got lucky and peirced the top layer so no lava spilled out of the pit, it would only have lost me a small room anyways

My plan is to build a much bigger pit to the left a bit, cover it with flooring apart from certain parts, build the lava furnaces/forges and connect my little pit to the bigger one

So is there anything incredibly stupid fun I'm doing here and anything I can do to minimise the damage fun? What can I do to make sure I have a safe magma forge/furnace area?

Magma doesnīt have pressure unless you pump it, so the magma will not spill out of the basin as long as the opening to the magma sea isnīt above it.

Things live in magma, to prevent invasion, use Fortification (Stops some nasties, not all, also slow down the rate at which the magma flow inside, allowing your dorf to run away). Remember to cue up other engraving jobs, so that the engraver runs away immediately after completing the fortification. To reseal once you have all the magma you want, carve an access from above into the tunnel, and designate as a Pond, to get a dorf to throw in a bucket of water. The magma will turn into an obsidian wall, preventing magma or creatures from getting inside.

But Roadhouse is a true masterpiece. Seriously.
