Freezing map bug
« on: November 06, 2006, 06:20:00 am »

My current fortress is in a freezing/none/none/terrifying map built on a frozen lake. To kill some time and put some peasants to work I had them construct some catapults once I had enough wood. I found out shortly later that firing the catapults resulted in breaking out squares in the ice, and was actually very happy when I found that this detail was included (nice touch, Toady   :)).

However, the human caravan was not as pleased as I was at this, because when they tried to leave one of the merchants ended up getting stuck at the end of the map on one of the holes in the ice. The merchant and his mule just kind of sat there and did nothing. After waiting a while, I built a small bridge over the offending hole in the ice, but this didn't seem to motivate him to move. Eventually, the merchant and his mule both went insane/melancholy, and just sat there until they finally froze to death. As such, in conclusion, I think that blocking the leaving squares the merchants use cause them to freeze up and never be able to leave the map.

Very strange.  No clue, but I'll write it down.

Okay, I got this to repeat to an extent last night. Goblins sieged my fort, and one of the groups of 16 moved near the fort, stopped, then attacked the front entrance. Once they had lost several of their numbers, the siege retreated back to the area where they had initially entered the map. When they got to the edge of the map, though, the ones that were left simply stopped and then returned to the area just in front of the entrance where they had briefly paused before. They just stayed in that spot without moving, even when other dwarves approached. Finally, I just gathered my marksdwarves and shot them full of bolts after getting sick of them being there.

I have a 3-wide bridge out to the edge of the map over the ice which covers the water holes, but the goblins arrived in an area covered with pools of water and attempted to leave from the same area. Also, the goblins were mounted on beak dogs, if that means anything.

Not really sure what's going on with the path finding, but at least its entertaining.
