First check their skills via Therapist. If there's any useful, I make them members of my fort, but if not, they will be haulers/farmers/meatshields.

The problem I have with them is that they come along, eat my food, drink my drink, and complain because I can't build houses fast enough.

If they have no relation to any other dwarf, and they mysteriously 'die', will any of my other dwarfs mind?

Pretty sure if you seperated the immigrants and no dwarves WITNESSED the death or were anything higher than Passing Acquaintance, they wouldn't care.

I generally make new beds and dig out new rooms for them. :P

Masons and engravers seem like they're always useful. Dual shield dwarves? This seems like a badass idea. I just built my first danger room and it seems to boost their shield skill to godly levels in less than a dwarven week. That and my never ending supply of tetrahedrite should be a good combo. How do you use then in combat though? Just run them in with a crack squad of axedorfs or something?

Well, 80-90% of all immigrants that enter my fort are turned into haulers, the few that are not, are put into their respective useful industries.
Some very unlucky immigrants get turned into my first militia (usually 3rd or 4th wave) and proceed to get slaughtered during a training exercise involving a panda.

I used to send all of my immigrants into a golden temple-like area in which a lever would be pulled dropping all to their deaths. Any that survived were assessed for their abilities and then usually dropped again for being useless. I then discovered Dwarf Therapist. Now my immigrants become haulers or something useful they have skills in. I kinda miss my sacrificing days.

I embarked in a frozen biome so cold even magma is barely effective at keeping us alive, my immigrants don't make it anyway.

Emplace a limit where I will only allow 5+ for each industry(Excluding Farming, Medical and Hunting.)
If that limit is reached, and I get dwarves with those skills, they are placed into the Military, and, depending on their weapons and squad, are given one of the four jobs:
Mining for Pick squads,
Mason/Farming for Squads not using Picks or Crossbows,
Hunting for Crossbows.

Even the NOBLES are placed in the Military.
