adding coffee (help please)
« on: September 01, 2011, 09:54:42 am »

I haven't done any modding before (apart from removing aquifers from the raws) and want to get into it, so i decided to try adding coffee for my dwarfs to drink (not very dwarfy i know but i really like coffee :P )

so, i got the Prickle berry raws off the wiki, and started looking at it and made some changes:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Im not too sure which parts i can just change here, and what bits link to other parts of the raws. Is what I have done here alright?
Also, how would I make a new workshop task to make coffee beans into the drink? Thanks

It's alright.
Also, you don't need a new reaction.
If it's available, dwarves will brew it at a still.

what if it uses the "extract from plant" command?

Do I need to add anything to make the still produce 'coffee'? Or does the still just work by changing it into liquid form?

Also, I like the idea of using 'extract from plant', so what would I need to add for that??

Edit: What about using 'Process Plants' to make coffee powder? And then that can be using in the still or kitchen to make coffee drink?

Since the plant uses [DRINK:LOCAL_PLANT_MAT:DRINK], your dwarves will brew harvested coffee plants (which you have as being edible raw - edit the STRUCTURAL material to change this) at a Still and produce "coffee" (i.e. the DRINK material).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

yeah I saw that and changed it. What raw file do i need to put it into? And how can I make dwarfs embark with it and find it around the map?

to get your dwarves able to embark with it, you'll need to do one of two things. either make the coffee grow underground with something like    [BIOME:SUBTERRANEAN_WATER] [UNDERGROUND_DEPTH:1:3] (snagged from pump helmets) or give your dwarves the tag [OUTDOOR_FARMING]. the first one doesn't exactly suit the way we grow coffee, and the latter doesn't exactly suit the dwarves themselves, if you want them to stick to only starting with indoor crops. if you give them outdoor farming, they'll embark with prickle berry seeds, wild strawberry seeds, and more, too.

you could just leave the plant like prickleberries and wild strawberries. grow outdoors, your dwarves will find them when asked to harvest plants in the appropriate biomes, and then be able to use the seeds (after the first batch are brewed) to grow outdoor farm plots. the [BIOME:NOT_FREEZING] tag means your herbalist dwarves will be able to potentially find it anywhere but tundra or glacier areas

as for what raw to put it into, you most likely want to create a new one, titled something like plant_mine, plant_more, plant_ random or the like. just to remind yourself that it's not from df itself, and needs to be moved over when they update. when you do this, make sure you say *something* in that file before the plant raws. the easiest to do is just copy the name of the file, so the first text in it says plant_more (for example), then the next line after that will read [OBJECT:PLANT] and then you can put your coffee plant a line or two below that (if this is confusing, peek at how any of the mods such as legend of forlorn realms, genesis, direforged, civilization forge post their unique plants and copy the style, they all do the same thing with the first few lines)

I don't know if this is possible but you should mill your coffee before being able to brew it. :D

Technically, you should have to mill or press pretty much everything before you brew it, so missing out that step here is consistent. Having a new reaction to turn milled or pressed plants into a new drink(provided they have their reaction product tags in order) would be pretty simple.

About the biomes, if you want to have coffee that the dwarves can embark with without the flavour issues astianax mentioned, surely you can just have a cave coffee plant? Or have it in addition to the basic version, which you can trade for with the humans or the unmentionables, or just have the herbalists get it.

When the new version comes out it'll have ingestion syndromes I believe, and more options so maybe you can make stimulating caffeine beverages then? Let's hope so.

I think there should be a custom workshop that should be made to roast the coffee before milling it and making it a brewable drink.

Could always use ashery or a smelter to do the same task I guess. Heck, magma could be used to roast them, I suppose. Mmmm, magma brew. Mineral rich coffee.
