Help me understand power/pump stacks...
« on: August 26, 2011, 02:08:56 pm »

Well, I've never meddled with power and machinery before, so I need somewhat of a walk-through for this. I have a brook running right through the center of my fort, too, and have a few goals:

1) FIGURE OUT HOW TO DO ANYTHING WTF
2) Dining room waterfall
3) Eventual magma waterfall
3a) Burning trap
3b) Obsidian farm

I thought I knew how to pump stack, but I do know how to set up a reservoir (more familiar with water, though...), my problem is just automating the system and finding a way to make the eventual magma flow out without, you know, making my fortress a burning gift of Fun and the current waterfall not, you know, flood the entire fortress.

I guess I'm giving up on the idea of machinery.

I can't figure it out. =/

you'll want a clock for automation. you need to be careful though, the easiest way is fluid logic, and that eats FPS.

Alternatively, you can look at the Goblin clock thread that's also floating at the top currently, although it's probably way above you.

Where's the magma? Knowing your intended route could help.

Eh, the big projects can wait. See, I know nothing about this. This is my first experiment with machines. I tried digging a channel near the river, built an axle and a water wheel, and when it was done... inactive. I don't even know where to start and the wiki isn't very specific.

I'm trying to start small with a 3 Z-level waterfall through the entrance to my dining room. Power from the river to pump-stack, and the water will go through a trough in the sky, fall through the dining room, and back out near the natural waterfall.

channel over the brook. brook's have surface that allows units to walk over them. channel it and build over it.

Find a 3x3 above ground square. Channel the middle square. Pop a windmill on the 3v3 square.
Anything below it will be powered. Use it to experiement!

I've got a river I can tap for power, but otherwise I'd windmill.

EDIT; Er, resized the wall. I'm not wearing my glasses...

Windmills suck. Use wheels if you can. Like A Dwarven Reactor

Not sure where to proceed from here as far as power goes.

It works best in a flooded storeroom full of corpses.

not sure that will give power. channel out THE TOP OF THE BROOK. Not next to it. then build a waterwheel

Well, the power is going. Far more than I'll need...

I also don't really get pump stacks. You just build it, build a wall around, a stair outside, then another one built atop the first, facing the other way, and connect it to power at the top? o.o
