Play via CLI/API
« on: September 30, 2011, 01:17:20 pm »

For modding purposes it would be great if the game had some CLI or some server/service that could be connected to to send and receive messages from the game.

Using it I could for example:
*Make a request for a structure of data that represents what exists in a region of the map. (specify a region with x1,y1,z1,x2,y2,z2
*Designate an order to build something at an xyz point
...

Basically all of the stuff you can do using the human oriented interface, but in a machine oriented format.

The only way to do something similar now is to screen scrape and simulate key presses.

This would make the game more of a service which can then look like anything through a custom client.

I'd imagine it'd take too much time, especially for what Toady wants.

I can't be bothered finding out where Toady said no to this.

But he did say no to this in particular.

i.e. He said "I am not going in implement an API".
