Detailing sometimes adds no value, and other rent bugs
« on: November 04, 2006, 04:32:00 pm »

In this thread: http://www.bay12games.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=2&t=000691

I looked into the factors that go into the rent of a room.

I did some pretty extensive tests, and came up with the values for detailing being 10*quality (this isnt actually visible for the player, but the numbers appear to follow the quality pattern) for rock... or zero.

Is that Zero value right?   It seems very odd that a masterpiece detailing would give no value increase over just simple smoothed rock.

Windows and statues also appear to behave oddly, any chance you could comment on them Toady?

The confusion from detailing comes from it only counting it from the side it was detailed from.  There are some conflicts with adventure mode if you have one piece of art visible from both sides of a wall.  Of course, since you can't tell them which side to detail from, and you can't currently detail both sides separately, it's impossible to control.

I don't know what's going on with statues and windows.

OK, the detailing makes more sense now.

Makes it of questionable value to do anything other than floors with it, since you can't really control where the engravers will stand if they have access to both sides.

Hmm.  You could control what side the engraving goes on if you made all of your walls two tiles thick. You can dig out the rooms to have walls any thickness you like.  You'd waste some space on slightly larger hallways though.  Or you could build statues on the side that you do not want engraved, so that the engravers can only reach the wall from the proper side, and remove the statues when they are done.  But that would take extra time spent hauling statues around.

Realistically, the dwarves would probably engrave every surface of the wall in question. As it is, there's no way to tell which side they engrave without watching the dwarves, there's no simple way to make them engrave the other side, and the user interface gives you no indication of the issue except through Draxxalon's research. The only solutions we have are unrealistic workarounds like building walls that are twice as thick. This will change, right?

This exact thing was done in Dungeon Keeper 1 and 2. Even though the minion could only have access to one side of the wall in a hallway to reinforce it, if an enemy were to dig perpendicular to the hallway and encounter the reinforced wall, the wall would have been reinforced on THAT side too. (as in; the side the minion could never have reached realistically)
