Staircase trap?
« on: September 06, 2011, 01:17:45 am »

Good morning fellow overseers,

I'm now in the situation to deal with the circus again and thought up a (new?) trapdesign. Would following design, utilizing stairs and cave-ins work? If I remember correctly a cave-in destroys stairs. So anything standing on the stairs get smashed by the cave-in and dropped down the stairs.

Code: [Select]
.|.
.W.
...
W<W
WXW
[~ about 25 or more z-levels]
WXW
W>_

legend:
. - empty space
| - support
_ - floor
W - wall
X - staircase

It would either destroy the stairs and all creatures, or it would rest atop the stairs and plug the hole.

Why not just rotate the plan 180* and drop the entire staircase on the clowns instead? it would be impossible to reset but it would cause maximum collateral.

@Eoganachta: I wanted to get them all one-shot - the unusual way. :P

@staircase-trap:
I tried different setups and couldn't destroy my stairs via cave-ins. Maybe it would work with constructed stairs, but it would be too much of a hassle to build them.

I guess I'll stick with an upright spear corridor or drop a ceiling on their demonic heads.

You could channel down an empty tube.

When in doubt, add magma. Repeatedly if necessary. If it works out right, you can breach HFS out the bottom of the Cotton Candy vein and carve fortifications, then go up a few levels, and breach the Magma with a fortification. A totally new meaning to fire sprinkler. :D

HFS is immune to magma.

You should all be ashamed of yourselves.  The obvious solution is to chain the baby up at the entrance as a kobold detector.

@Di:

If I understand you correctly, you mean:

Code: [Select]
W.|.W
W.W.W
W...W
W.<.W
W.X.W
[~ about 25 or more z-levels]
W.X.W
W.>__

I tried this one, but not with a constructed straircase.

I can confirm that mined, natural staircases will just support a natural wall cave in that lands on them.  I think constructed staircases may work, but the channeled / collapsed floor method of getting a hollow tube like Di says will work for sure.
