Unconsciousness interferes with sleep/rest
« on: November 01, 2006, 04:45:00 pm »

I'd be surprised if this bug wasn't reported before, but I haven't seen it anywhere yet.  It looks like wounds which cause a dwarf to fall unconscious periodically interfere with them sleeping or resting -- meaning their wounds will never heal.

I'd just like to add that injuries such as "losing an eye" or (in certain unlucky cases, both eyes), will perpetually throw the unluckky dwarf into a state of brief consciousness, followed by unconsciousness, about ever 30 tiks or so, even years after the injury was sustained. Since these injuries can never "heal," so to say, I'm guessing that the fits of unconsciousness, brought about by them, will eventually be gotten rid of?

Nope! He'll be a dead dwarf in a year or so by some sort of fit of insanity. This includes those dwarves that somehow manage to get out of bed and start their work again, lapsing into unconsciousness every so often in the middle of it.

It's a known bug. Don't know the status of this is, but Toady has been working on other things (with excellent results, judging from reports elsewhere in these forums).

I've got a dwarf in my military who has been missing both eyes for years.

He's a productive, functioning member of my primary (highly skilled, well armed, well armored, 5 of the 10 are swordmasters or champions, he's just shy of the swordmaster status himself) swordsdwarf brigade.

He passes out periodically (once or twice a season), but just gets back up, and then goes about his thing.

He's a happy dwarf too.

(He frightens me!)

So blind dwarves shouldn't be happy?  I wouldn't mind making rocking chairs for some of my vets who are variously mutilated, although those who get horribly wounded in the course of training might not count.

I have no problems with him being happy (I was commenting on his mood because the earlier post said they would go insane... and he is definately not).

I am somewhat concerned by the fact that one of my most successful, well-trained, well armed squads... is wandering around with a dwarf who cannot see anything, and he is wielding a masterpiece obsidian sword.

(hmmm... you know... that might explain some of the training injuries....)

The Recruit Limul Kâkdallogem's First day in the Dwarven Army.

<Limul> ~Dum de dum..
<Limul> Boy, I sure do love hauling this hunk of limestone to the stockpile.
<Limul> Hmm.. This looks like the same piece I hauled yesterday..
<Limul> ! ... Limul, you know what this means..
<Limul> Job security!
<Limul> ~Dum de dum..
<The> The Dwarven army wants YOU!
<Limul> Sweet!
<Limul> What equipment do I get?
<Besnar> Full plate and a warhammer.
<Limul> Sweet!
<Limul> Gotta go get equipped..
<Limul> Booze.. Now...
<Limul> Drink!
<Limul> Boy, I never noticed how great this flint door is..
<Reg> Chug!
<Rakust> Chug!
<Ed> Chug!
<Fikod> Chug!
<Id> Chug!
<Limul> Crap, I gotta drink the prickleberry wine..

...

<Limul> Ahh, that was great..
<Limul> Oop, gotta get my stuff..
<Limul> Food!
<Limul> Eat!
<Limul> This is one fantasically awesome flint door..
...

<Limul> Phew.  I finally got this cool pair of copper gauntlets, this set of bronze greaves, and this bronze plate mail.  Oh, and a cool iron shield, and an exceptionally decorated silver warhammer.  Oh, and a leather helm.  Off to the barracks!

<Limul> Hey, it's my good friend Inod Kibfath!  Hey Inod, I haven't signed your cast yet..
<Inod> That's okay, Limul.
<Limul> Olin, what happened?  When did you get your hand mangled?
<Olin> Just last month.  That'll serve me right for fighting while sober.
<Limul> Deler Kibfath?  Tosid Akrultan?  Sibrek Limârdumat?  Kib Asolast?  Monom Tithlethcog?  All of you guys?  What happened here?
<All> You'll find out soon..
<Limul> Oh, you must know wny, you're the only dwarf left standing.  What happened here?
<M> Sparring accidents.
<Limul> Hmm.  That's some rather poor luck.
<M> Want a go?
<Limul> Sure!
<M> Oof!  Grunt!
<Limul> Wow!  You can certainly swing an axe well for a dwarf missing both eyes!  I barly managed to block that one.
<M> Again?
<Limul> Sure!

<M> Grunt! Oof! keep it up!

<M> Hold up, I lost control of my axe..
<Limul> That's all right, I've got it.  It's stuck in the left hemisphere of my brain.
<M> Well, give it back, I kind of need it..
<Limul> It's really wedged in there, you'd better help me with it..

<M> Errng!

The Recruit Limul Kâkdallogem has bled to death!

I don't think the healing code checks whether your are "sleep"ing or "rest"ing, it just checks to see that you are grounded in a bed.  The KOs should be fine, although their frequency is indeed a known bug.

Ah, well, unconsciousness does seem to interfere with other stuff, like sleeping.  I just lost a 2-yellow 2-red wound (all limbs) dwarf to dehydration caused by melancholy caused by exhaustion, even though he was in a bed.

One of the yellow wounds did heal during the process, though.
