I have a problem.

I'm a veteran of this game, I've been playing since 40d. But I'm still not very good whatsoever. I especially seem lacking at balancing efforts at the start, and planning good defenses ahead of time, beyond a little cage trap hallway, and a drawbridge. In short, I know the basics of the game well, but now I'm just looking to refine my skills. Especially with fortress defense. And also the military. The Military still confuses me.

Try the Wiki. It has a step-by-step guide. If that doesn't work, just experiment with throwaway forts for a while (generally my method of learning new features).
