Yep, I have a queen and a king consort.

i've had two caravans now since I met the requirements.  But I'm also full up on immigrants.  The Wiki says he/she will arrive along with an immigrant wave.  Since I will get no more immigrants I hope that doesn't mean she will never show up.

From what I understand, if you are at your population cap, the monarch can't migrate. If you edit the init files to increase your population cap to more then your current population, she should be on the next boat, if dwarves had boats. You could then put your population cap back to where it is now if you wanted to.

Or you could cull your dwarven population to make room for your monarch. I hear magma is fun.

I already have more dorfs than I care to have, having already upped the pop cap in hopes I'd get the monarch.  I guess I can pop it up a few more if necessary.

I've considered the second option, but I have such a huge number of legendary professions it'd be hard to choose who gets to take a magma shower.

Not to mention I've been so successful in not wiping this fort off the face of the earth I almost feel guilty intentionally sacrificing good dorfs just to get a useless noble just to see what would happen.

assign unwanted dorfs to burrow inside magma room.

Well I bumped the pop cap up another dozen and the Queen showed up within a month or so.  So that worked!

Now let's see how much fun being the mountainhome might turn out to be...

The Queen shouldn't have any material or item preferences, which means no mandates! She might still make demands, but those are extremely rare.

Actually, the king and queen are probably the nobles that are the easiest to satisfy, apart from the "semi" nobles. Sure, they require massive rooms and masterwork furniture etc, but by the time you get them you should have a few artifacts to give them aswell as skilled blacksmiths/carpenters for the furniture.

Yes I noticed they have no preferences.  And I have an artifact weapon rack, table, mechanism (for a weapon trap) and bed to put in their room.  Already with just the weapon rack, table and bed it's a Royal Dining Room and Royal Bedroom.  Adding gold masterwork furniture from one of my legendary metalsmiths will make it that much better.

AND they seem to be picking up stuff from the last siege.  Nobles that aren't irritating and actually do useful work?  Am I still playing Dwarf Fortress?

Still, this is the first time I've made it to Mountainhome.  I'm rather proud of BasementStricken, despite the ominous name.

Just to add a counterpoint here:

My own fortress became the mountainhome with a population of 145 (a third of them children) and a pop limit of 70.  Although there was no queen, four fighter-types and a cheesemaker came, despite the pop limit.

So that makes me think that you don't need free pop for a queen.
