An abomination of wood and bone that devours everything in its path and comes in endless swarms.

Oh, you meant non-DF elfiness. Yeah, you're probably right on that count.

Only in Dwarf Fortress would you try to catch a mermaid to butcher her and make trophies out of her bones

Well, it IS pretty elfy. One goblin siege, you've got an entire 8x8 stockpile of goblin roasts.

I like to think of elves as more than hippies. Savage, yet elfishly elegant and graceful, druid/warriors.
Can you imagine surviving in DF without Steel, Funobtainum, or burrying yourself underground?

well I think it will be pretty challenging running a elf hamlet.

You cannot dig underground (well maybe for stones you can), you build most of the thind from trees (you will have a special designation order that can harvest trees without cutting them) and you just use weapons and armor of wood.
No magma, no power generators, no cunning traps (meh maybe only upright spikes, but without mechanism it;s pretty lame).

On the balancing side you can breed giant egles and other wild animals to help you in defending the hamlet.

And of course you can butcher and eat sentient creatures.
Even your own citizens.

This make migration and migrants most welcome events. Especially when the food stock is running low.

This is a challenge some dorfs here would likely do.
