Going old-school..
« on: August 12, 2011, 09:34:48 am »

What is the best and most stable version of DF that does NOT include the Z axis and instead uses the old formula, such as the one seen in Boatmurdered? v0.23.130.23a is rejecting regions out the ass.

It wasn't.  Boatmurdered seriously predates 40d.

Wait, this game once had no Z axis? o_O

But, but...where did the dorfs settle? Did you use to have to find a big mountain and just live in it?

Try playing one of those versions. Or just read/look through Boatmurdered. It's fairly simple.

Basically, every map used to be the same... some land with a river, flowing north to south, then a cliff face and inside it an underground river, bottomless chasm, magma river and not-so-hidden Fun Stuff, always in the same order and at about the same distance. Actually it was pretty fun that way. Sometimes I wish, there was a similar 2D mode but with all the features like burrows, new military screen, new jobs and the ability to build walls outside. v0.23.130.23a is "missing" so much stuff that it's hard to get used to it when you only know v28 or v31.
And it was much more difficult to learn... if today's learning curve is like a learning cliff, the curve back then was like a cliff with several overhangs and elite marksgoblins shooting at you all the time while rabid elephants awaited at the bottom (and at the top too).

Also read Boatmurdered. It's mandatory for every true dwarf.
