Is there any way possible at all to fix him? I vaguely remember seeing that having him be appointed by the mayor instead of baron would do it, but does it really? Do I still have to set the tags from [EXOTIC_PET] to [PET] if I do this?

If you fix the pet tags any old animal trainer will do the job, frankly I recommend it, D.M. is nice and all, but I never like having one dwarf be utterly irreplaceable.

Even if he is 'fixed' he will not work. You can make him show up, but he'll refuse to train any exotic creatures.

To make it actually turn up, go in the entity raws and make it appointable by the expedition leader or the mayor.

You should make the _exotic removal when he arrives. Thus, no cheating, and it's like he works.
