How do you train your military?
« on: August 07, 2011, 02:53:23 pm »

Having not played much DF2010, I'm wondering about how you train your military. Squads of 10 seem to train awfully slow, and danger rooms are pretty exploitish in my opinion.
Playing the defense mod, I usually embark with 2 dwarves with skills in dodging, armor user, hammer/axe dwarf and go on from there. What is your approach? I would prefer the answers not utilizing danger rooms.

One good way to train without danger rooms is by having your soldiers beat any captives you have to death with training weapons.
You should have access to plenty of captives playing fortress defense.
Keeping a squad of soldiers equipped with real weapons doing standard training so that you'll have some soldiers ready for surprise attacks tends to be a good idea if you do this though.
Having smaller squads tends to be good too, if you have larger squads not all the soldiers might end up taking part in sparring and other activities.

Then I come to my senses and respond "Well why the hell not?"

Mostly sparring for my regular soldiers with the occasional mass slaughter of (armed) prisoners. My peasant militia get their experience from shooting alot of bolts at sieges.
