Stairs around pump stack
« on: August 09, 2011, 03:40:53 am »

I wonder if anyone has tried this already.  I wanted to make a special goblin entrance that was simply a tall pump stack surrounded by stairs, and when the goblins come down the stairs, the pumps activate and water knocks them down, making them fall all the way to the collection area at the base.
Is this a feasible trap or does water not work that way?  I suppose I can switch it to magma to be sure, but then I lose all the free copper and bronze weapons.  And I don't know if I can stand making 100+ magma-safe pumps.

Flowing water does push things, so the theory is sound.  The specifics of how to set up your pump stack and the stairs should be fairly simple, mostly a matter of timing to get the goblins at the perfect moment with the water.  Post a schematic if you get it working :)

This should work yes. How far are they going to fall anyway? I think you'll need a good 8 or so levels to kill them in one hit but it's also possible to dunk them into a drainable basin and simply drown them.

If the stairs are directly around the pump stack then building destroyers may get at the pumps.

I thought goblins didn't drown? I'd say the drop should be about 10 levels, though. The pumps should probably have some room for the water to start flowing, say 1-2 tiles, and then you run the pumps before they reach them. This would unfortunately make the tower wider, and take longer to climb. For best results the drop zone should have menacing spikes on repeat.
