Question about constructed floors + projects
« on: August 09, 2011, 03:44:32 am »

Hey quick question guys, I want to build furniture and shops on top of constructed floors and I was wondering if there is any way I can do that?

Do I have to download some sorta program? Go into the raws? What?

I really really want to know if you can just build a house and dump your stuff in it, rather than carving it out of the mountains.

Un-dwarfy, I know, but it's connected to my project....

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So.....can you help me with this?

1. Construct the floor

2. Order the furniture/shop to be placed

3. Watch dwarves build it.

Some buildings (like beds and coffins) need to be built "inside" which means you need to build a roof over the site first (ie another constructed floor 1z up). Some don't.

Well that's weird.

I built a 12Longx12Widex3High box in a cavern level and it doesn't work.

Maybe it's because they aren't made by blocks..I Heard that was important....I'll try again in this project and hope for the best...

::EDIT::

New question.

Does anyone know of any good tutorials on burrow assigning??

Burrows are easy just make the inside of your fort or where you want them to go a burrow name it, then go to m - a make a new alarm and go to the part where your burrows show up and press enter. A A should show up next to the name of your burrow if you now set the Civ Alert on that alert all the dwarves will go to that place.

I got fed up with my fortress, so I decided to kill everyone (abandon is for elves) with a cave-in.

OK, cave-ins were always pretty deadly, but with the new falling object damage they are downright brutal.  As far as I can make out from the logs, many people were killed by the flying bodies of other victims.  One baby's corpse ricocheted off three other people, two walls and the floor.

What do you mean by "doesn't work"?

Buildings should be considered distinct from constructions. While both are built via the b build menu, constructions are inert to q and t, are removed by designation, and are generally more similar to terrain features. Furthermore, dwarves can place buildings on constructed floors, but buildings cannot overlap other buildings, nor can constructions overlap other constructions. Also constructions provide support while buildings do not.

You can't build a construction on top of a construction - that's pretty much the only 'difference' you'll note.

So if you floored an area you can't put walls on it. But otherwise its treated as a normal (unengraveble) floor.
