well i can conclude that after tentivly reallowing the gear in the name of !!SCIENCE!! to see how many dwarfs it will ultimaly kill, that it only took 4 dwarf deaths to turn the affected item to normalcy. so probably 2 dwarfs per super heated peice.
unless they cooled down normaly.

eather way: when facing a fire blasting opponent, forbid the gear of the killed dwarfs who bleed to death despite not dieing froma  firebreath attack for a game month and it should be fine. test on a rookie first though as results cannot be guaranteed.

in another vein of thought: Think wede be able to get a dwarf to weild a flaming weapon of some kind using this? by getting a dragon to fry the weapon wile its on the ground.

scratch that: found the cause, theirs dragon blood on the item, a steel high boot. since dragons have such a high body temp, their blood classes as such as well. i find this out via a axedwarf wearing it and dieing. it is probable that if you can get the blood on a weapon and no were else, and not put the dorf through water, that you could weaponise it for melting damage.

Just make sure only dwarves with proper protective gear touch it.

First we have to figure out if the heat transfers from item to item. If so, it won't work. Because the weapons heat will move to either their hand, or their gauntlet, and then to their hands, burning them to death. It may transfer due to contaminants working how they do. Although I'm not sure if blood spread is disabled by default in fortress mode.
Edit:
Ideal testing situation is you have a dorf with disposable armor(or no armor) go kill a dragon/imp/hot thing with the weapon. This should be done nearby the armor area if possible, to avoid loss of too many haulers(unless it doesn't matter)(alternatively, give your haulers protection too). Then, have a new dorf(your old one probably died) grab protective gear first, then the weapon.

Well, secretions won't go through something like gloves, so I don't see why blood would. But then again, secretions typically aren't quite as hot as dragon's blood (and temperature does completely ignore armor). Someone needs to test this. Arrange it so that a dwarf with hand protection will pick up one of the !!item!!s and see if he starts melting.

Well, i just checked the silver short sword that was used to kill the dragon, and it has the blood on it.

Despite beign silver, it hasent melted, and the weilder seems perfectly fine. so i can conclude: It only affects organisms that come in direct contact with the blood. so if my dorf stabbed something, ide hope that it would get blood conaminant, and since blood dosent degrade yet, this is a permanent contaminant effect. The opponent would shurly die of their fat melting from their bones. This artifact rocks.

on another note: if this blood is left ina  water trench then picked up, i will not be suprised if the dorfs coated in this way die from body part melting.

EDIT: tis a great shame for dwarven science.

it seems the blood on a weapon cannot be transferd despite the weapon being plunged into a foe.
thus: dragons blood can only be utalised as a self suicide method. i will keep the boots for any particularly bothersome nobles.

It also appears that you can wash off previous blood with more blood. this was concluded when the swords weilder, went and killed a giant rat in the name of !!SCIENCE!! in the caverns.

That it could not be weaponized in such a manner is a shame. However, even a failed experiment is still progress, and we now know that you can remove blood by adding even more blood. T'is a good day for !!science!!.
