I first trained a number of dwarves as Marksdwarves - one Champion, two Elite, some less. I wanted them to have Armor/Shield skills so I decided to set them to unarmed so they'd train wrestling (this is before I became aware that Wrestling training is sorta out of control atm).

Some of them trained to Legendary wrestling, some not, but regardless, when set back to Crossbow, all insisted on continuing Sparring in Barracks.  They spar melee with their crossbows, gaining Hammer skills.

I got rid of the barracks, and now they just Soldier instead of Shooting at Archery Range.

They carry a quiver, but they don't pick up arrows, not even when on duty, and thus don't use archery even in real combat.

A new dwarf set to Crossbow after this shoots at Archery Range just fine.

I've tried all sorts of switching weapons and going on/off duty and whatever I do I cannot get the original five to pick up arrows and shoot.

Check their hands, I can almost guarantee that they have one of their sparring partner's articles of clothing in the hand holding their crossbow. They rip it off during the spar and never remember to drop it and, unfortunately, they can't use the crossbow as a crossbow if something else is in their hand. Same goes for miners' picks and woodcutters' axes, iirc.

I couldn't verify it in that game, since alas, that fortress is now infested with goblins, but in my next game I encountered the same, and that did indeed fix it.  (In this case they never sparred, but one was holding some cloths he stripped from a kobold

I have the same problem but i dont know how to make them drop it :S

Its not a piece of ripped clothing most of them are wearing two gloves on either one or both hands. In three times the time it took them all to get to expert wrestling they are still dabbling marksmen
