I recently updated to Dwarf fortress 176.38a. I'm really liking the new compass and everything, and I decided to make a new world based on the new version.

I've got a bit of a problem though. In the last version I was using (169.33g), I'd be able to walk around town and find maybe 2 or 3 decent companions. You know, Spearmen, axemen and the like.

However, in this version, I can't find *any* potential party members anywhere, apart from drunks. Does this new version do away with them, or am I missing something?

There are theoretically a few around, but it would take a lot to get one to appear (it would have to be a guard that then changed towns and then did not become a guard in the new town).  I'm aware of the deficiency and I'll get them back in as soon as I can make some sense out of their existence in world generation (which might happen during the next Army Arc push, if I add adventurer/mercenary types for that).

The idea of hiring a mercenary/ex-military type in adventure mode who could tell you about the different wars and battles they've been in just sounds cool, even if it's only "In the year 1036, I participated in the Battle of Dreamhill against the nation of Bandedknives."
