basically you can connect an axle to any active mechanism in any perverted way, however if you disengage the mechanism the axle will fall apart, in my case i had the axle protrude 5 sqares into air off the z2 platfrom, and it was spinning! After i shut off the gears the axle fell apart into logs.

I noticed this was a particularly quick way to dismantle 3 linked water wheels, and handily the wood was piled up neatly on the floor next to them (it didn't fall in the water)

Disengage a mechanism, or disengage a gear assembly? A disengaged gear assembly has no connection to the axle - think of it as if the gears shifted and slipped off the axle. You need a "supporting" assembly to uphold any hanging mechanics, that can, in turn, be connected to a "clutched" assembly, resulting in a safe-to-disengage system.

it is NOT! any hanging machinery will fall if has nothing "solid foundation" attached to it. Disengaged gear is not attached to anything

But it does seem a bit random. Anyone who doesn't check the wiki or these forums would be unlikely to figure it out. I mean, how could a system that is active support something that an inactive system can't?

Welcome to Dwarf Fortress.

I noticed the same thing yesterday.  And now, I know how to deal with it.  The physics of support are weird, but more or less self-consistent.
