Dwarves falling into their own traps
« on: July 23, 2011, 01:12:43 pm »

During a siege, friendly dogs and dwarves are falling into their own traps. I'm noticing that it is happening while shooting is going on. Is this normal? Thanks for the help.

The only way dwarves can activate a trap is if they fall unconcious on them... I think... maybe they got shot and fell unconcious due to pain?

Dwarf Fortress: You have a team of hundreds working for four years to make a game where you save the world again. We have one guy for four years make a near-infinite world generator, write the physics, generate histories, form detailed descriptions of every human, elf, dwarf, and goblin generated, caverns, and huge randomly generated monsters made out of who knows what. You. guys. suck.

The only way is if they are unconscious or if they fall on a spider web. Otherwise I don't see how it would happen.

Thanks for the responses, it must have been that they fell unconscious momentarily due to pain, but that's all it takes I guess to fall into the trap. I'll have to rethink where I engage from now on. As an addendum question, this happened because I had to charge a horde of goblin marksmen sieging right outside my front door. I unlocked the door so they would come in and get hacked on but they just waited. What is the best way to charge a pack of archers?

I guess you could have two gates on the side with your army behind them, and then when the goblins come running in, close the way forward and back (trapping them). Then open the two side gates with your military behind them and let them charge. If you do it well you can shorten the distance they have to run through considerably and take far fewer casualties. But it's a bit of a pain to get it to work properly.

You can also reduce the effectiveness of enemy archers by engaging them inside, or right after a checkerboard-like hallway crossing floor tiles and wall tiles.  Keeps LOS down, greatly reducing the distance the enemy archers can shoot at you down to one or two tiles, and also has a handy side effect of reducing your military's propensity to run off after one distant opponent they see but the others are still too far away to engage.
