[38a] drinking, water source zones
« on: February 14, 2008, 12:01:00 pm »

First of all, if that matters, I'm playing with modded raws where there are no dwarves, and instead play humans. The problem is this: I'm on a map with a brook, and my men will ONLY drink there, even if I designate a MUCH closer water source and use "Zone-only drinking".

The designated water source is a channel connected to the brook.

Sorry, but I gotta ask this; does the water source zone laid over the shore as well as the water, or just the water?

I don't know if it makes a difference for water source zones, but it's worth a shot.  Also, try building a well somewhere, they should prefer drinking from that.

The water source was on both water and ground.

Also, I DID build a well, and it seems to work, they drink from there now.

Do you have a save you can stick up somewhere?  It could be a few different things I suppose, but nothing I can think of really applies.

Well, as of now, no, I don't have a save I could send you. Oh well....at least building the well fixed everything.

I have a save from this weekend demonstrating this phenomenon. In the newest version too. Unfortunately I'm not sure if I have anywhere to put it up. If anyone knows where I can throw it for Toady to get at it it would be much appreciated.

I've actually seen this quite a bit because I often use drinking areas, especially since wells seem to have the trade depot bug (regardless of location relative to the task to be done all tasks are routed to the very first building built, and all subsequent buildings are ignored).

For what it's worth, I've had this issue as well. I for the most part ignored it, until my dwarves began to drown in the brook, or eaten alive by the lamprey's... then I began to get curious.

After finding this thread, I've just found and set "Zone-only drinking". Not sure if they still wander off to the brook or not, I'll run it a bit more and see what happens (winter's not far, the lakes and brook are about to freeze over).

Still interested in a saved-game if it does?

Hmm. for what it's worth, the "Zone drinking only" seems to be working.
Additionally, v0.27.176.38c for the Mac.
