Greedy Trader?
« on: July 22, 2011, 12:40:08 pm »

How is it that I can mark four butchered horses and several butchered groundhogs for trade in exchange for a bronze breastplate and the shopkeeper still says, "Perhaps if you throw in more goods I can make you an offer."

Do you have a broker? If so check the trader loss/ profit on the left bottom corner, if it says loss then they won't trade
I thought this was fortmode, but the trader is still making a loss on the deal.

Two things could be causing this:

First of all, horse and groundhog meat aren't very valuable. A quick look at the "Item Value" page on the wiki can help you infer that horse and groundhog meat both have a value multiplier of 1 (they're not listed as having a multiplier on the "Material Multipliers - Animals" table, so I'm assuming that means they're nothing special in terms of value). For better results, try megabeast meat.

Secondly, how valuable is the breastplate? If it has a lot of value-enhancing symbols around it, that generally means that it's worth a good deal more than an unadorned, no-quality one--a +bronze breastplate+, for example, is already worth three times as much as a no-quality one. Again, look at the item value multipliers to see what's what.

Try offering the minimum amount of currency for the breastplate and trade. The shopkeeper should make a counteroffer asking for the breastplate's value. Similary, you can ask for all the shopkeeper's money for you various meats and he will make a counteroffer offering the meats' worth in coin. That way you can quantitatively appraise the shortfall in value.

The value if the breastplate was 21r or whatever that character is.

Thanks you all, I was able to buy it off of him for a Iron war hammer (I am a swordsman, so I have no need for it). I had thought that maybe I had hit some sort of glitch.

Yeah that's an important one to notice. I assumed the weight was value when I started out and was severely disappointed when my ogre corpses sold for 1 Dorf buck. Typically meat and most other animal products are not worth much. Ivory might be an exception, but I don't typically hunt for monies.

For the record the best loot typically looks like:
Silk (Giant Cave) >= Gems >= Currency (Including foreign) > Quality Decorated Iron stuff > Normal Iron stuff > Other metals in descending order > Leather or plant cloth clothing >= wood crap (bloody elves) > Animal products (not including exotics)

That should get you the most profit/weight.
