Miner won't dig west
« on: February 14, 2008, 12:23:00 am »

I have _|M which is to say a floor, a wall, and a miner, left-to-right.  The miner has no access to the marked floor.  The miner will then absolutely refuse to dig that wall.

This is 100% reproducible, and means that saving my trapped miner is a major pain in the butt (have to dig around until he gets above or west of a passageway).

Worse, though this is a different problem, a miner will *cancel* the mining designation on an inaccessible tile.  So if a miner gets stuck, all mining everywhere stops as the trapped miner desperately tries to find some work to do.

I'd also mention that same is with channels - They always want to dig a channel from the west. I learned it in the hard way when I tried to dig a channel into narrow corridor to break free from goblin ambushers. Miner just wouldn't start digging from the east.

They also won't dig into a tile they are standing on if there's no other way out. They used to be stupid, but actually able to free themselves from situations when they are digging a channel, and some smartass who was also digging cut them off.

I would definitely like to see dig a channel out from under yourself make a come back (though definitely not from under others).

As a work around, you could try having them dig a ramp on the tile under them then remove the ramp after they're down. That at least worked for a 2x3x4 pit without stairs, though I don't know if it would work if they were trapped on a 1x1 tile...

That definitely is possible, though it might require stairs.  I had hoped my miner would dig out the center of a water pit from the stairs above and discovered that to do so he dug under his own feet, and into the pit.  I had no other picks, so even though he was happily swimming for a while, that was the end.

I don't really understand what the bug is??? my dwarves dig west just fine...

how did you get into a situation where a miner couldn't access that floor? that's what I don't get, you either have a locked door or a rewall in the way...

Well, you got it, that's two of the ways to get into that situation.  The most common is the miner digging out a channel while on the wrong side of the channel.  The most fun is the miner digging into a river/aquifer/magma pipe and thus losing access to the stairs to safety.
