game runs extremely slow
« on: June 12, 2007, 10:58:00 am »

I have a 1.6ghz computer and the game is running extremely slow, and I'm talking about the gameplay not map creation. Even the menu screen lags when I am scrolling through menus. What can I do to fix it?

have you got up to date graphics drivers, that could be a problem, also try running something like spybot to see if that picks up anything, is that any help?

If that isn't enough (I have a 1.4 Ghz P4) I'd suggest looking through the init.txt file- temperature and weather can be shut off. Although it detracts from the fun a little bit,  it can make a huge difference. As I understand it, Temperature is a few FPS difference, while weather being on actually cuts your FPS in half or so. For me, at least.

There a couple things in game that can really slow it to a crawl.  An active flood that is pathfinding will lag my game significantly.  Locking pets in a room has been known to cause large amounts of pathfinding lag also.

Was DF running acceptably quick at some point?

If out of nowhere it started lagging, consider you might have a piece of flood trying to path or some locked doors that have some cats spamming pathing lag.

I've been having speed problems as well on my new 1.8 GHz laptop. Video drivers are fully updated and temp/weather are turned off (along with vsync).

I set the pop cap to 120 dwarves and only have about that many running around. Still, every time I get sieged I seem to lose about 3-7 FPS and the game is continually running slower and slower. The game is running at around 20 FPS when I had over 50 not too long ago, and it maxes at 100 when there is 50 or less dwarves around.

What are the primary factors that dictate how fast the game runs? I always figured pathfinding was the major one, so I keep my animals locked up in cages and always build using extremely path-efficient fort layouts. Does anyone know of anything I can do to speed the game back up?

Toady has said having a lot of items is currently the main cause of slowdowns
