This is not really a bug, severed limbs are salvageable. Not sure about chunks.

But does anyone know if severed limbs take away from the total meat you get from a corpse?

If not, THAT might be a possible exploit. Get your swordsdwarves to chop up animals into many pieces to get extra meat.

It doesn't seem to affect how much meat/bone is processed from a corpse item. In general, a body part will be butchered for one meat and one bone regardless of what the part is, no skull from a head for example. The corpse will still produce the normal load of meat/fat/skin/bones/skull (even if the head has been severed).

Hence if you have sufficient haulers and butchers for all the jobs that will be generated, a set of slashing weapon traps that you force your local wildlife through will generate massive amounts of meat and bone.

Just let the limbs and lower body parts rot out in the grass.  You'll still get the bones once they've decomposed naturally.  And the meat singles aren't worth slowing down your butchers .. or building enough butcher shops to keep up with all the limb jobs.  Ahem.

If we got a Japanese guy with broken English to say that last sentence, we'd have some good laughs.
