Engraving
« on: July 17, 2011, 08:24:46 pm »

As my current fort's lifespan is reaching a historical length, I have had to dig more and more coffin-space.  I saw the catacombs picture toady posted and finally decided to make my own.  It looked impressive, and I sent my legendary engraver in to carve up the massive amount of surfaces.  After a few months ingame, I checked up on him.  About half of the hundreds of images engraved were of this one time where an elf tamed two eagles.  I have hundreds of kills on record for my fort but only a few have been drawn.  Why would he choose that one elven "accomplishment" to repeat?  Is it a bug?  Or is this something to do with my engraver's preferences?

I don't really know why this happens. It's pretty common, though. The guy certainly doesn't have a preference for a particular historic event, so it's rather odd. Better than circles, though!

i have a night creature killing this one elf.  that is the only notable thing that happened to that elf, and only one of 8-12 kills of the night creature.  but EVERYONE in my fort knows it, and engraves, decorates, and sews this image.

i have "hidden history" on, and i check all of my art.  my fortress' history in legends is fairly pathetic as my dwarves just love carving that scene i mentioned, and also the symbols of my civ and my parent civ.

I had a friend at university who, whenever we'd hang out and drink or something, would tell the same 3 stories over and over, pretty much every time we hung out, even though we'd all already hear the stories. I imagine some dwarves are the same way.

Keep in mind that the dwarves are essentially alcoholic toddlers, and act accordingly.

I had the same issue in one of my worlds, all anyone would carve for the most part were grizzly bears and black bears killing Dwarves. I actually found that there were several different wars and the like with Dwarves being killed by bears, and my engravers only engraved these scenes. If those are the only important things that happened in Dwarf history, I'm amazed they're not extinct.

I had one of a random dwarf in the fort admiring some cheese. Then he made one of the same dwarf devouring the cheese.

Odd thing was, my fort had no cheese. Lots of badger tallow roasts though.

Forgotten Beasts seem to be akin to Toady playing Dwarven Roulette with your fortress, as they can be anything from harmless giant worms made of mud to necrotic-gas spewing nigh-invunerable iron hydras of doom.
