I'd imagine the problem is compounded for things like classical.  Is the artist the composer,the band who performed it, or the conductor?  I'd go with the band which performed it, but I'm sure you see everything.

It depends on how you want your music organized. Personally, I go by who the prominent figure on the CD is. If it's an single work, like an opera, I go with the composer, if it's a compilation put out by a musician, I go with the musician, if it's an orchestral performance I really had to have, I go with the conductor. It can make finding specific songs hard, though, unless you know your collection really well. On the other hand, you don't have to worry about having your CDs broken up under several artists.
