Problem is, the game quickly spirals out of control after one or two sittings. If you're doing multiplayer, it becomes hell to manage if real life pulls one of your players away.

Actually, the game supports adding and removing players.  Just simply have one of the people who is around load the game (and be host) then in the escape menu, choose "Edit Player" and either remove the name of the missing guy, or add in the name of the new guy.

But yes, missing someone sucks.

I'll play, I suppose, if we're only using the base game, which is the only one I have.

(Protip guys: You can get it on Steam for free. PM me for details. [Am I not allowed to talk about this?])

Free? legal?

The game has no DRM in it.  It's simply a registration key.  You can't register it through Steam (as Steam will check the key) but you can enter the key through the game (which doesn't check).  Even a base game installed through Steam (all Steam does is add it to your Owned Games list, and you'd have to copy-pasta the key into the base game anyway to unlock the content).

In any case, I've bought none of the expansions--I'll pay for Zenith someday when I play AI War again, and LotS they gave to me for free for doing so much bug reporting--but I've got them all unlocked.

Yeah, you probably shouldn't talk about this stuff. Pirating talk can get you banned or topic closed.
