Dwarven Dominoes
« on: July 07, 2011, 07:00:50 pm »

I was thinking about how to cause a series of consecutive cave-ins. Would it work if I put a support down, then build a single floor tile on top of it, and another support on top of that, and another floor tile ad infinitum? or could I use the force of the first cavein to destroy a nearby support and make it collapse?

Theoretically, I think this could launch a target at frightening speeds if it is timed properly. The first cave-in throws the target away, then when it goes far enough, the dust triggers a second cave-in and launches it even farther and faster. Or does it not work like this? Do I need to conduct some science?

I think you've come up with an idea for a dwarven particle accelerator.

You don't need to buy paint for that room?

i wonder if you could demolish a steel FB with this. I mean, assuming you could contain it that is.

Make a 1-tile-wide hallway that will flood with water from one end. Place water-sensitive pressure plates down the length of the hall.

Connect each pressure plate to a corresponding support somewhere else.
Then, when water flows down the hall, the supports collapse in order.

Since cave-in dust will scatter objects and creatures, it is theoretically possible, though unlikely, that the dust wave will transport stuff to the far end of the hall.

I can imagine this as a game dwarf children play.

This way, they will drain your resources for less time.

If we manage to find the Higgs Boson with this, not only will I make a public announcement that DF is actually a pocket universe, I will also go to CERN and laugh in their faces.

Pumps can be used to generate some very very specific timing events.  You can accurately measure events down to the single tick.  It's well within the capacity of pump-timing to sequence your cave-ins.

However, I suspect an old nemesis will raise its head.  Creatures in unnatural flight are immune to normal effects.  This is why you can drop a creature through a magma pipe unhurt, floating spike traps don't target falling foes, and other small oddities.  I suspect the creature will become invulnerable to the second cave-in while still under the effect of the first.

That being said, some speed:0 and a lot of pumps should produce sizable amounts of science.

Cave-ins won't destroy buildings they don't directly hit. Only things a nearby hit affects are creatures and items.

A bit off-topic, but I find it odd they're trying to find it in the Cern particle accelerator. C'mon - if it was there, it would've probably been noticed when the machine was being built.
