A surgical scalpel is quite different from a butcher's cleaver, IRL.  That's also why scalpels can afford to be an inch long and thinner than paper, they're used in an entirely more delicate way that lets them keep their edge longer.  Now, if the doctor cut a little too deep and tapped against bone, then the edge would probably suffer many times more wear than cutting through fat (and let's be honest, it IS fat).

If Obsidian Swords are made to break easily, they ought to actually break realistically (if a place was hit, the shards of obsidian would break off inside, and if that place moved, the shards tear into it):
The Swordsdwarf slashes the Troll in the Upper Right Arm with his +Obsidian ShortSword+, tearing the Muscle!
The Troll swings at the Swordsdwarf!
The Troll misses!
The Obsidian Shards rend the Troll's Upper Right Arm, tearing the muscle, tearing the fat, and tearing the skin!
A Tendon has been torn and many nerves have been severed!

This goes back to weapon damage, which we currently don't have.  Weapons never degrade, therefore obsidian never loses its edge.  Wait for that update, then deal with realistic primitive weapons.

I'm very much looking forward to that... taking into account wear-and-tear, maintenance etc. would probably offer a more satisfying overall balance between different equipment types and materials because there will be more and more complex legitimate choices (although I'm already very impressed with the state of things as they are).

That's when Toady will reveal the secret he's been keeping all along: Adamantine is actually incredibly brittle, to the point of military uselessness.

Wear and tear would finally make bronze a useful material: Iron and Steel rust, but Bronze never corrodes.
