Volcano draining into a bottomless pit?

I managed to snag a screencap before it all drained away.

Is this normal?

Yep, but it's a bug.

Half the time the lava explodes out of the top of the pit and drowns half the map.

It sorta did that. Except it was more like a small thermo-nuclear explosion that killed half a dozen ratmen, a troll, and a giant rat.
