Silver makes the best hammers and maces, copper makes the best shields. For armor you want at least bronze or iron, yet copper is still miles above nothing of course. But you don't need to waste precious iron or bronze for weapons now, use silver blunt weapons.
Excess copper can be used for decent bolts.

Did somebody just rule 34 two veins of metal?

Oh, bronze is for armor? I've used it for shields, thought it was better than copper - Thanks! ^^

Just lost 15 dwarves to a couple more ambushes, locking down the fort and training/making gear for half a year.

Shield material is irrelevant for defense, for shield bash attacks density counts and copper is the best of the shield metals for that. If you don't care about shield bash attacks you can use wooden shields and they'll work just fine.

Excessive lignite ore + a touch of magma = .. exploding death trap? It might be tricky to setup, and take some time and labor to reset, but I know it works, I've er.. accidentally ignited lignite ore with magma before. It seems like the natural course of action for your embark; far more suicidally dangerous dwarfy than mere glass serrated disks or marksdwarves.
It sure should...if you put something explodey on your !!lignite!!. Dropping it in some water, or building a lignite grate and running magma through it, creating a !!lignte grate!! and running water through that, can drown and burn goblins at the same time! It's like magma, but without destroying the secondary goblinite!
